Why Fortis
Excellent checks can still leave an unpaid liability.
Fortis does not replace due diligence. It completes it. The platform combines detection and independent assurance with a controlled route for settling the worker-related PAYE and NIC liability.
Three layers, three questions
Detection, assurance and protection
Detection answers
Does the payslip calculate? Does the RTI data match? Is there an anomaly or missing record?
Assurance answers
Is the provider independently assessed? Are its ownership, contracts, processes, finances and HMRC position being reviewed?
Protection answers
Has the correctly calculated amount been paid to HMRC and reconciled to the agency’s workers?
Fortis brings these layers together, but the final layer is what distinguishes it: control of the agency-funded PAYE payment.

Monitoring compared with Fortis
| Control question | Monitoring-led approach | Fortis approach |
|---|---|---|
| Payroll checked? | Yes | Yes |
| RTI/payslip anomalies? | Identified | Identified before release where data is available |
| Who holds agency-funded PAYE? | Normally the umbrella until its HMRC payment date | The relevant party retains control for direct HMRC payment |
| When is non-payment known? | Typically after funds have been released | Payment is part of the controlled process |
| Evidence produced | Checks, reports and later confirmations | Worker-level calculation-to-payment audit trail |
| Final question | Did somebody else pay? | Did we settle and reconcile the validated amount? |

Insolvency
The insolvency difference
Monitoring can reveal that an umbrella has failed to meet its obligations and help a supply chain respond. Fortis is designed to remove the agency-funded PAYE amount from that downstream risk before the umbrella’s normal payment date. If the umbrella fails, the relevant party’s evidence already records the calculation and direct HMRC payment it made.
Walk through the scenarioThe promise, stated precisely
A precise, evidence-led promise
Fortis is designed to prevent JSL exposure arising for the PAYE and NIC liabilities correctly calculated, paid and reconciled through its controlled process. It should not be presented as a substitute for accurate input data, legal advice, proper provider selection or the management of later amendments and liabilities outside the system.
Fortis does not provide legal or tax advice and does not handle client money. Protection depends on complete and accurate data, correct use of the process, successful payment and allocation, and the treatment of any later corrections or HMRC assessments.
